Retinoids are the most proven anti-aging and anti-acne ingredient there is — and the most misused. This is the slow, boring, effective way to start, so your skin adapts instead of revolting.
The honest premise
Retinoids work. They also irritate skin that's rushed into them. Almost every retinol horror story is really a 'too much, too fast' story.
The ramp-up
Week 1-2 — Apply a pea-sized amount twice a week, at night, on dry skin.
Week 3-4 — Move to every other night if there's no irritation.
Week 5+ — Build toward nightly as your skin tolerates it.
The buffer trick
Moisturize first, wait ten minutes, then apply the retinoid. The buffer softens the introduction without killing the results.
What's normal, what's not
Mild dryness and a little flaking in the first weeks is normal. Raw, stinging, weeping skin is not — that's your cue to scale back to twice a week and rebuild. Patience beats a strong percentage every time.
