The internet will sell you a tenth serum before it sells you consistency. This checklist keeps you from impulse-buying skincare you don't need — and helps you patch-test the ones you do.
The pre-purchase checklist
1. Which of my actual goals does this serve — or am I buying the hype?
2. Does it duplicate something I already own?
3. Will it clash with my retinoid or acids if I layer them?
4. Have I patch-tested it — a small amount on my inner arm for two days?
5. If it does nothing in eight weeks, will I actually stop using it?
The rule
If a product doesn't answer at least three of these clearly, put it back. The best skincare budget is spent on finishing what works, not starting what's new.
The patch test, always
Two days, inner forearm, before it ever touches your face. Boring, quick, and it saves the reaction you really don't want.
